Introductory Certificate in First Line Management

AWARD OVERVIEW
The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Award in First Line Management is a concise qualification which gives an introduction to the basic skills, knowledge and understanding required by today’s first line manager. The mandatory unit ‘Solving Problems and Making Decisions’ is designed to develop practical techniques for tackling managerial problems and making decisions from gathering and interpreting information through to the effective communication of outcomes.

ELIGIBILITY
The Junior Staff Officer’s Course (SCC), King George Vl / Advanced Course (ACF / CCF) and the Officer’s Initial Course (ACO) have been approved by ILM to offer the Award in First Line Management.

The qualification cannot be gained retrospectively and thus any Adult wishing to complete this award must register with CVQO during the course itself.

PERSONAL SKILLS AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
Adults will be expected to demonstrate personal skills and specific competence against a set of performance criteria which have been mapped against the course training programmes and course assessments:
Solving Problems and Making Decisions
Introduction to leadership
Organising and delegating
Giving briefings and making presentations
DELIVERY
In order to qualify the Adult must complete their course and commit to returning a 1000 word Work-based assignment within one month of finishing their course.
This Work-based assignment is scenario based and focuses on the core module of Problem Solving. Through their Work-based assignment Adults will need to present their case for the improvement or change in a logical manner. The overall pass mark is 50 marks. Additionally, Adults must achieve the minimum marks in each section.

The assignment should be approximately 1000 words and be structured to follow ILM’s stylistic requirements. Before embarking on the assignment it is strongly advised that candidate’s read ILM’s resource guidelines carefully, as these indicate what the assessor is looking for and what marks are assigned against each criterion.

Course assessments carried out during the week will also count as evidence towards the qualification.

ASSESSMENT
Adults will be assessed against the performance criteria and how best they demonstrate these competencies through their written work. In addition course assessment sheets completed by the varying Course Instructors at Cadet Training Centres will also contribute to award evidence.
The Adults written work will move through 3 assessment stages before a Pass result can be confirmed by CVQO:

Marked by Assessor
Marked by Internal Verifier
Passed to ILM for External Verification
However, work could be returned to the Adult for resubmission at either the initial assessment stage or at Internal Verification and on rare occasions by the External Verifier. Where this occurs, the Assessor’s mark sheet will be sent to the Adult so that they may interpret their comments.
An Adult will have the opportunity to resubmit their work, one further time at no extra financial cost.
