Biography:

  • I joined No 1360 (Stapleford & Sandiacre) Squadron in 1961 at the age of thirteen.
  • Left ATC to join Royal Air Force September 1969.
  • Recruit Training at RAF Swinderby.
  • Undertook training in the trade of Electronics Mechanic, Ground Communications at RAF Locking.
  • First posting to 51 Squadron RAF Regiment based at RAF Wittering.
  • Posted to HMS Jufair in Bahrain followed by a short tour at RAF Muharraq also in Bahrain, to complete a nine month unaccompanied tour.
  • Posted to the Radio Engineering Unit Henlow, spending a year building Radio and navigation equipment.
  • Next posting to NEAF, RAF Episkopi, Cyprus. Unfortunately, this idyllic tour was interrupted by the Turkish invasion of the Island.
  • Nominated for further training, returned to RAF Locking and successfully passed a year long course to become a Technician.
  • Posted to RAF Wattisham as an airfield tradesman.
  • Returned to long range communications and cryptography in my next tour at 840 Signals Unit, RAF Siggiewie, Malta.
  • Posted to the RAF’s most northerly base, Saxa Vord in the Shetland Islands, followed by an almost four year stay at RAF Fylingdales on the North Yorkshire Moors.
  • Presented with the Air Officer Commanding In Chief, Strike Command’s Commendation.
  • Another tour in Cyprus, this time at RAF Akrotiri Salt Lake.
  • Received my Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
  • Next to RAF Pitrievie Castle, in Scotland is where I became part of NATO for a couple of years before moving into Satellite Communications at RAF Oakhanger.
  • My final tour was as a Satellite Specialist within the Training Development and Support Unit firstly at RAF Abingdon and finally at RAF Newton, where I eventually finished my twenty five year engagement with the rank of Chief Technician.
  • Returned to “1360” as a Service Helper and on leaving the RAF became a Civilian Instructor. I went into Uniform in 1996 as an Adult Warrant Officer and in 1999 became commissioned into the RAFVR and took over the Squadron.
  • In 2000 joined the Adult Training Team as Instructor on CI Induction Course.
  • In 2006, I assisted the Wing Media and Communications Officer as Deputy. I was invited to join the Central & East Region Media and Communications Training Team.
  • In April 2008, joined the Wing Staff Team as Wing Media and Communications Officer in addition to continuing to run 1360 Squadron.
  • Member of the Institute of Leadership & Management (MInstLM).

Civilian Occupation:

Operations manager in the Soft Services Industry covering the East of England and the Midlands.
