H&S News / Updates

The following text offers a brief summary of the latest news & updates regarding health & safety matters within the Wing / ACO;

OCTOBER 2008
The following notice from HQAC H&S branch has been published on Bader…

Following visit to ACO formations, my H&S Advisers have reported that although the vast majority are compliant, significant numbers of volunteers have not viewed the Health, Safety and Environment, awareness/refresher training CD-ROM, issued to every ACO formation last year. During a recent RA training course, not one volunteer had viewed the material.
As this is a fundamental part of the ACO, Safety Management System and a Comdt AC instruction, OC’s are to ensure that all volunteers have viewed this material before commencement of any ACO activities. Donald A W Gordon (Head of Health and Safety ACO)

In light of the above notice, can all Sqn Cdrs please ensure this instruction from Comdt AC is completed as a matter of priority.

FEBRUARY 2008
Squadron Accident Reporting Pack (SARP) issued to all Squadrons within the Wing.

JANUARY 2008
Wing produced standard Squadron Health & Safety Binder issued to all Squadrons for immediate implementation.

AUGUST 2007
All Squadron’s will of received the new Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) awareness / refresher CD-Rom issued by HQAC via Wing HQ. This new initiative is for the use of both existing and new adult members of the Squadron and it is imperative that Squadron Commanders ensure that all staff are given the time to review its contents.

For clarification, the intended use of the CD-Rom as follows;

a. Provide HS&E ‘awareness’ training for all adult volunteers.
b. Provide bi-annual HS&E ‘refresher’ training for all volunteers.
c. Update HS&E skills in conjunction with formal training e.g. Risk Assessment Course.

A record of training is required using the HQAC form (also available electronically on the CD-Rom in the ‘Downloads’ folder) and this should be kept and maintained up to date in the Squadron H&S Binder. As part of their 6 monthly routine audit process, Wing Staff Officers will check that the form & use of the CD-Rom is recoded within the binder.

OCTOBER 2006
STORAGE OF FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS & FLAMMABLE GASSES (FL&FG)
All Squadrons are reminded of the ACO policy with regards to the requirements for storage of all FL&FG on Squadron premises;

a. No FL&FG are stored in a domestic ACO building.
b. All FL&FG, when authorised, are held in a suitable labelled container.
c. All FL&FG are stored and labelled in accordance with the COSHH Risk Assessment / manufacturers instructions / Hazard Data Sheet.
d. A method of controlling access to the cabinet and its contents is established.

Where a Squadron requests a cabinet to store FL&FG, OC Sqn must provide a ‘case’ detailing why storage of the FL&FG is necessary, the quantities and types of FL&FG to be held etc. This should then be submitted for approval through the chain of command i.e. to Wing HQ for onward transmission to HQAC – Org 2, who will arrange for the provision.
