Article posted: Mar 06, 2011 by Sqn Ldr Utting

This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets and 1101 Kettering Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets on Northampton Road was also formed in 1941 and will be celebrating the Corps’ and its own 70th Anniversary by holding a Summer Ball at Wicksteed Park on Saturday 23rd July.

1101 Kettering Royal Air Force Air Cadets Squadron would like to share this special occasion and event with the local community. If any member Ex-members, friends and members of the local community would like to join in this celebration, tickets are available at £20 each. Alternatively, a table seating 10 people can be purchased for £180.

The evening will be semi formal and will include barbecue, use of the dodgems, a raffle and a sealed bid auction. Entertainment will be provided by local band Tautas Roks and Big Bopper Entertainment Ltd will be providing a disco plus various ‘giant’ games. It will be a great opportunity for ladies to wear their posh frocks, evening gowns or cocktail dresses and the gentleman to look smart in their dinner jackets or lounge suits.

The Squadron would also like to open this event to local businesses as an opportunity to not only support the Royal Air Force Air Cadets but to also advertise their services or products. This can be achieved in a number of ways such as sponsoring a table or by donating a prize to be used in a raffle or sealed bid auction. If a company chooses to sponsor a table this will be at the small fee £100. This will also include two free tickets for the ball. The table will be named after its sponsor and an A4 centrepiece can be provided to advertise the company. Business cards can also be left on the sponsored table and in other places around the function room.

All proceeds from the ball will go directly to the squadron and will help fund their key projects for 2011. Their first intention is to provide new training facilities and equipment to not only improve the way in which they currently deliver training to the cadets, but also to provide additional activities for them. Their second aim is to open this project to a wider audience by purchasing facilities for recruitment of cadets and adult volunteers.

Audio visual equipment and computer facilities will assist the cadets and volunteers in all aspects of training, such as the BTEC in Public Services, expedition training, aviation subjects and first aid. The first aid equipment itself will assist towards training all cadets to a high level and see them achieve a recognised qualification. Expedition equipment and tents will assist in introducing new cadets to camp craft and training for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Radios and Archery equipment will also help deliver specific training to the cadets where qualified staff are available but are currently unable to deliver these activities due to lack of facilities and equipment.

The Squadron welcomes new cadets aged 13 or over and parades each Monday and Wednesday between 7pm and 9:30pm. Adult volunteers are also welcome at the Squadron on Northampton Road.
The next intake evenings for cadets is on the 9th March and 9th June. Prospective cadets and adult volunteers are welcome to visit the Squadron at any time to observe the squadron in operation. KETTERING ROYAL AIR FORCE AIR CADETS RECRUITMENT EVENING

1101 Squadron is holding a formal recruitment evening on the 9th March. New cadets usually arrive any night and join in the training program but this new structured method of recruitment will ensure all new cadets start the same day. This will help forge friendships within the new group and will also help the new recruits settle into their new surroundings as they won’t be starting on their own.
The Air Training Corps offers many opportunities including flying, gliding, a wide range of sporting events, shooting, adventure training activities, academic qualifications, aviation related topics, leadership skills and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. However, more importantly, helps the local community at events such as Remembrance Day.
The Squadron welcomes new cadets aged 13 or over and parades each Monday and Wednesday between 7pm and 9:30pm. Adult volunteers are also welcome at the Squadron on Northampton Road.
If prospective cadets are unable to attend the Recruitment Evening on the 9th March, the next one will be held on the 9th June 2011. All prospective cadets and adult volunteers are welcome to visit the Squadron at any time to observe the squadron in operation.
