On Sunday 7th June, 3 Newton cadets attended Wing Athletics, held in Bedford, to compete for South and East Midlands at a range of track and field events.
It was an early start with the bus being caught at 6:45am and the day’s events beginning just after 10am. It was a warm day and the region’s cadets were challenged in the increasing heat, even those participating in events at 10am.
The first competitor from 1936 was Cdt Cummings who threw javelin and came a respectable 4th in the Girls category. Cpl Paine was next in action, who placed 3rd in discus for Junior Women, earning her a place on the podium and a bronze medal.
Finally, as the weather was at its warmest, Cdt Pereira ran her 1500m race and came 3rd in the Girls category. Cdt Pereira also earned herself a spot on the podium, as well as a personal best and another bronze medal for the Squadron.
The competition was very high from all Wings and the placing from 1936 Newton’s girls earned South and East Midlands a total of 11 points which went towards a tremendous overall win. In addition, the Girls category, consisting of Cdt Pereira and Cdt Cummings, came first above the other Wings. Cpl Paine’s category, Junior Women, drew second: another great achievement.
Overall, it was yet another enjoyable day for everyone who attended. Three more Wing blues are on their way to the squadron, adding to the overall sports success that 1936 Newton Squadron has had this year.
