Wing Band and Banner Drill Competitions Held at Wittering

South & East Midlands Wing held both it’s annual Wing Band Competition and inaugural Wing Banner Drill Competition at RAF Wittering on Sunday 25th April 2010.

On the day, six Squadrons competed in a variety of competitions as part of the Wing Band Competition and ten Squadrons competed in the Wing Banner Drill Competition.

The standard was particularly high in all events. The Wing was fortunate enough to secure the services of Wg Cdr Gil Singleton RAFVR (T) and Flt Lt Robin Harris RAFVR (T) as judges for the Band competitions and WO ATC Mark Butler judged the Wing Banner Drill Competition.

5F (Northampton) Sqn won the Full Band Competition with 1084 (Market Harborough) Sqn coming a close second place. In addition, Cdt Bull of 5F (Northampton) Sqn won the Solo Drummer section with 1084 (Market Harborough) Sqn winning both the Percussion section and Fanfare section as well as being joint winners with 858 (Rushden) Sqn for the Inspection.

CFS McKay of 858 (Rushden) Sqn won the Solo Bugle section and 2229 (Loughborough) Sqn won the Ensemble section.

Wg Cdr Nigel Dickinson, OC South & East Midlands Wing presents Cpl Townsend of 2229 (Loughborough) Sqn with a certificate for winning the Ensemble competition. 2229 Sqn’s winning Ensemble team consisted of CFS Candlish, Sgt Breeze, Sgt Thomson, Cpl Townsend, Cpl Kelly, Cdt Arme, Cdt Willis and Cdt Stevens.

Meanwhile, 1359 (Beeston) Sqn won the Wing’s inaugural Banner Drill Competition.

Sqn Ldr Mark Richards, Wing Training Officer (Cadet Development) thanked all the Squadrons for their participation and commended the high standard of performances as well as thanking the judges for judging the competitions and also Fg Off Emelye Towell (Wing Band Coordinator) and WO Rob Phillips (Wing Warrant Officer) for their support in planning the event and their assistance on the day.

Wing Commander Nigel Dickinson, OC South & East Midlands Wing, who presented the trophies and certificates on the day to the winning Squadrons and individuals commented “again this years’ Band Competition standard was very high and congratulations go to those winning Squadrons and individuals. In addition, the standard of competition in the inaugural Wing Banner Drill Competition was also impressive. I’d like to thank all the Squadrons and cadets who participated in today’s competitions and I also echo the thanks to all those involved for making the day a success”.

The winning Squadrons and individuals will now represent the Wing at the Regional Field Day in September 2010.
