On Sunday 10th May, a host of 1936 Newton cadets made their way to the Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium, Leicester, to compete in an inter-Squadron athletics competition. The day began with an early rise; cadets had to be at the Squadron for 0730hrs and returned home late at 1900hrs.
Throughout the day, cadets across the South and East Midlands wing competed in a variety of track and field events. Such events included long jump, shot and javelin in field and a range of running from 100-1500m. The events were split into five categories to cater to the age and gender groups of which all had amazing attendance in all areas. The groups consisted of boys(A), youths(B), men©, girls(D) and women(E).
Overall, Newton came an outstanding 9th place of 29 Squadrons, despite the last minute category swap for some boys (A). A special congratulations should go to Cdt Perira for winning her girls 1500m race and Cdt Newton and Cpl Paine for both succeeding in their discus event; all three are through to the regional competition on the 7th June, earning wing blues and a chance at region.
Though he didn’t get through to wing, a special appreciation should go to Cdt George, who nobly volunteered to run the 1500m for his group, putting in a tremendous effort to the Squadron, just like every other cadet who participated.
Well done to everyone who participated, not only on the day but also the training sessions beforehand; 1936 should be very proud.
