36 cadets and members of staff from 2070 (Glenfield) Squadron attended the annual squadron Christmas camp on Friday 2nd December – Sunday 4th December in Edale, Peak District, Derbyshire.
The squadron has held its annual Christmas camp at Champion House in Edale for many years, excluding last year that was cancelled due to hazardous weather. On Saturday, the cadets completed a walk around the local area. The weather left a lot to be desired as Flt Lt Mayoh-Smith commented “In all the years I have been here, the weather hasn’t ever been this consistently miserable”.
However, not to be deterred the cadets were in good humour and for many cadets, whom it was their first experience of a Christmas camp with the squadron, the weather proved to be a bit of an education and certainly a test of their kit! The day finished with a Christmas dinner (cooked by Sqn Ldr Mayoh-Smith) and an evening’s entertainment of fun, games and a sods opera.
On Sunday the cadets were split into two groups. One group had a rock climbing session with a qualified Instructor. The cadets were taught how to belay before testing their climbing abilities on a number of different climbs, using ‘features’ of the wall, sticking to specific coloured routes, being blindfolded and some low-level bouldering.
The other group went on a short trip into Castleton to learn more about the Peak District National Park before visiting the local shops and eateries.
