209 SAR Experience

Article posted: Nov 04, 2009 by Sqn Ldr Pass

A dozen Air Cadets from 209 (West Bridgford) Sqn travelled to Suffolk to fly in a RAF Search and Rescue Sea King helicopter of β€˜B’ Flight, 22 Squadron.

The Cadets were briefed by one of the aircrew and then split into two groups. They were then kitted out with flying helmets which included an intercom system which allowed them to listen to the aircrew during the flight.

Each group had a twenty minute flight during which the pilots displayed the manoeuvrability of the Sea King helicopter and the radar operator and Loadmaster demonstrated their equipment.

Cadet Sarah Bramley (15) said of the flight β€œit was really good, I really enjoyed it. It was interesting listening to the aircrew and great fun when the helicopter was twisting and turning.”
