The 2011 Guest of Honour at the 209 (West Bridgford) Squadron Presentation Evening was Councillor Marie Males who held the Office of Mayor of Rushcliffe for that year.
As well as the position of Mayor Councillor Males also held a position of Chairman of the East Midlands Airport Community Fund which she suggested to the Chair of the 209 Civilian Committee might be able to make a donation to the Sqn.
After downloading an application form from the funds website and a quick check to ensure we met all their requirements the form was submitted. 209s application was successful and the funding was used to purchase a Marquee with the Sqn name on and flags with the 209 Sqn Crest. The new Marquee will be used at Recruitment events, Armed Forces Day and wherever the Sqn needs to put its brand on the map.
The East Midlands Airport Community Fund was established in April 2002 and since then over £600,500 has been pledged to a whole range of initiatives which aim to bring lasting benefit to the communities around the airport.
The Community Fund is managed independently by a Community Fund Management Committee that meets six times a year, and is open to community groups within a defined ‘area of benefit’ that meet certain criteria.
