Air Cadets from 209 (West Bridgford) Sqn experienced square bashing fifty’s style at this years Rushcliffe Borough Council Armed Forces Day. One of the displays at the day had uniforms and equipment used during the Korean War. The display was run by Jed Jaggard, a historian who usually gives presentations in schools on military history going back to the Roman times.
The Cadets showed interest in his display which included weapons, uniforms, food and cooking equipment. Jed then suggested that he teach them some weapons drill using the Lee Enfield rifle. He explained that he only had five wooden mock up rifles so five Cadets were volunteered not knowing quite what they were letting themselves in for. But pretty soon they became enthusiastic, so much so that when they had finished learning how to ‘slope arms’ and ‘present arms’ the rest of the Cadets and Staff wanted a go! Jed described the 209 Cadets as ‘very enthusiastic’ and added they had taken great interest in his display.
As well as learning fifty’s rifle drill the Cadets also helped run a recruitment stand while the Sqns Civilian Committee ran a tombola which raised nearly £100.
