On Sunday 23rd April 2017, 9 members of the squadron band from 2229(Loughborough) were at RAF Wittering for the annual South & East Midlands Wing Band Competition. It was a successful day competing against other squadron bands from around the Wing and we placed 3rd in Ensemble, 3rd in Percussion (highest we have ever been) and Cadet Ben Whitmore came 1st for Solo Drummer, which is just amazing.

On arrival at RAF Wittering the cadets were first up with their fanfare, which included,FS Jonathan Brown, Cpl Charlotte Pullan and Cdt Amadea Tristanto. Next up, were the percussion, this is the first year that the band have included the bell lyre, played by Cdt Thomas Hughes.

This was shortly followed by a solo performance from Cpl Charlotte Pullan playing the bugle. Before long, the cadets stopped for lunch, but not for Cdt Whitmore, he had just enough time for more practice with Flt Sgt Brown before his solo performance on the snare drum.

The last performance of the day was the ensemble which included, FS Beth Purvis, FS Molly J Satterthwaite, FS Jonathan Brown, Cpl Charlotte Pullan, Cdt Ben Whitmore, Cdt Amadea Tristanto and Cdt Matty McGough, their performance included SOS by ABBA and Valerie by Amy Whitehouse.

After a long day, the Wing finished with a final parade to celebrate the day’s achievements, with Sqn Ldr Andy Pass handing out the winner’s trophies and it wasn’t just the cadets that received recognition for their hard work, Flt Lt Garraway received a Commandants Certificate for Meritorious Service for his service as Squadron Commander at 2229 (Loughborough) and contribution to the Wing Cadet Development Team.
