Recently, Cadet Warrant Officers Jake Foster and Saffron Green travelled to London for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Award presentation. The presentation took place in St James’ Palace in the presence of other cadets that had achieved the award and their family members. The morning started with some introductions from the D of E staff and the celebrity presenter for the day, Mike Bannister, the youngest pilot to fly the Concorde aircraft and carried on to fly it for 27 years, also being one of the three pilots to fly the aircraft on its final flight in London’s Heathrow Airport, a very fitting presenter for the Air Cadets!
To the surprise of most people in the room, they were also visited by the HRH Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward. He came around and spoke to the cadets, asking them about their D of E experience and what they gained from it. A very nice person to talk to indeed. He gave the cadets their certificates which were finally presented by the presenter, Mike Bannister. Overall an amazing morning was had by all, CWO Foster commented, “It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and to meet Prince Edward was brilliant. I really would recommend the D of E scheme to everyone because the rewards at the end make all the hard work pay off. I mean how often do you get to go to St James’ Palace and meet a member of the Royal Family whilst collecting an award like this!” Congratulations to both Cadet Warrant Officers on this amazing achievement, thoughts are already being put into their D of E Diamond Challenge to which we at 2418 wish them the best of luck with!
