CWO Kahla from 2418 Sherwood Sqn has recently completed a week in the Brecon Beacons to achieve a Level Three ILM award in Leadership. The week consisted of theoretical leadership lessons, command tasks and lots of different adventure training activities to test the leadership theory that had been taught.

The first day comprised of leadership lessons at the youth hostel where the 35 cadets from various cadet forces stayed, followed by small command tasks, such as building a tower out of different shaped blocks at the top of a hill and having to send a messenger down the hill to instruct a second group on how to build the tower. These then being compared to test the efficiency and clarity of the teams communication. There was also a very informative talk from Colonel MJF Kingscote which got a lot of the cadets thinking about characteristics plus strengths and weaknesses of a leader.

After this the cadets took part in various adventure training activities to put what they had been taught into practice. These included canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling, mountain navigation, gorge walking and mountain biking. CWO Kahla “gorge walking was probably the best despite being the coldest, having to jump into rivers and climb up rocks”.

To finish the week and test all the skills that had been learnt there was a two day expedition which started with the accent of Pen Y Fan in drizzle that didn’t stop until arrival at camp. The second day was a relay of different activities including canoeing, orienteering, abseiling down the side of a waterfall and also mountain biking.

“All in all it was a fantastic week with loads of great adventure training activities plus a lot to be learnt to help with leadership. I would highly recommend the course to anyone and encourage cadets to apply next year” CWO Kahla
