On the 6th of July cadets from 2418 Sherwood attended the wings annual field day competition. This day comprises of competitions in a vast spectrum of cadet activities including drill, shooting and aircraft recognition to name just a few. It is a very challenging day with cadets leaving the unit at 7am in the morning on what always seems to be a heat wave of a day! However the cadets are always itching to get to RAF Wittering to perform after weeks and even months of preparations! On arrival all the different teams are briefed for the days competitions and then disperse and attend allocated time slots for their respective competition. Once all 29 squadrons have completed their competitions the tense period of waiting on final parade begins! The cadets did not have to wait long for the good results.
The cadets achieved some fantastic results including 7th in the banner drill, 6th in the aircraft model competition and 4th in the media competition. This all helped towards the overall result of 9th for wing field day which all the squadron were very proud of!
The best result for the squadron was without a doubt winning first place in the Auster Trophy. This competition encompasses everything the cadets do on the squadron including training such as BTEC qualifications and D of E, camps and courses such as Nijmegen and squadron camps plus representation for activities such as sports.
Winning this award required an immense amount of hard work from every single individual on the squadron, from the cadets who attended numerous events and gained many awards and qualifications to the members of staff who ran the events and training for the cadets. “The commitment and time devoted by all on the squadron this year was undoubtedly the key factor in the unit’s success” Flt Lt Bates.
