On Sunday 15th January, cadets from 504 squadron joined with cadets from 1360 Squadron to go flying, after the hour’s bus ride we finally arrived at RAF Collage Cranwell.
Our day started with a short safety briefing, this covered all aspects of safety whilst on the ground and in the air. Soon it was my turn to fly, I was called to go and put my flight suit on and stand by the flight line, the butterflies building as I watched the plane taxing towards me, my nerves not help by the sight of the previous cadet emerging from the Grob Tutor with a full sick bag.
Once inside the aircraft, the instructor calmed my nerves and explained the plan, we then taxied to the runway. The flight was amazing; well worth the wait. Unfortunately, because of a low cloud base we were unable to do aerobatic manoeuvres, however the flight was still rewarding and an exceptional experience.
I would like to thank the staff who made such a wonderful day possible.
If any 13 to 17 year olds are interested in taking up the challenge of the Air cadets, please contact the squadron on a Tuesday or Thursday evening between 7pm and 9pm or visit the ACO Website, www.aircadets.org
