On a dry but cold morning on Sunday 2nd February 2014, cadets and staff of 504 (West Nottingham) Squadron attended St Martin’s in the Tours Church, Nottingham, for their annual service to commemorate the origins of the Air Training Corps and 504 Squadron.
The service was lead by the Squadron Padre, Reverend Mandy Cartwright, with cadets playing an active part in proceedings. Cadets were invited to deliver readings and prayers, as well as act in a short play.
Once the main service was over, the cadets and the rest of the church congregation moved out of the church to the war memorial for a short act of remembrance in recognition of the 100th anniversary since the start of the First World War. The names of those who fell from the local area were read out, with the banner lowered and a wreath laid.
Officer Commanding 504 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Jodi Hudson, commented: “It was a really special event for the Unit that not only commemorated our formation, but also the centenary of the beginning of World War One. Our Cadets, along with the congregation as a whole, certainly got involved in the service and ensured the occasion will not be forgotten for a long time to come.”
