Friday the 22nd October found 504 (West Nottingham) Squadron and guests celebrating their annual dining in night. The evening began with all invitees congregated at the Village hotel in Chilwell. The air was tinged with a touch of regret as it was also the dining out night for Flying Officer Ashley Rudd who has been a steady and resourceful presence in the Wing for many years.
After a well prepared meal we came naturally to the speeches, this time with a twist. Some squadrons take a sweep stake on how long the boss’s speech will last; this was not so at 504s’ dining in where a game of boss’s bingo ensued. The staff of 504 had carefully constructed a list of 20 words that Flt Lt Emma MacAndrew would have to fit into her speech and converted these into bingo cards. The winning ticket was purchased by CI Claire Button winning a whopping £90. During her bingo fraught speech Flt Lt MacAndrew thanked the staff and cadets of 504 for their hard work throughout the year and her hopes for the year ahead. The OiC also gave a few gifts and words of advice to Fg Off Rudd including the showing of a clip of Dad’s Army which lightened the mood somewhat.
Wing Commander Dickinson followed with his own funny and light-hearted speech echoing many of Flt Lt MacAndrew’s sentiments and giving a thank you to Fg Off Rudd. This was followed by a farewell speech from Fg Off Rudd chronicling his time and exploits within the corps.
A right of reply speech was given by Cdt Sgt Coult thanking the staff on behalf of the cadets and expressed his hopes for the success of the squadron. Awards were then presented to the cadets of 504 for their performance throughout the year along with badges and certificates for 6 Sqn Marksman Badges and 5 Youth First Aid awards. A promotion was also made to Cpl for Cdt A Trickett.
After a superb night, Cadets, Officers and guests of 504 continued to dance the night away.
