126 (City of Derby) Squadron has won the South & East Midlands Wing Athletics competition for the 10th consecutive year. This unprecedented victory in the history of South & East Midlands Wing puts the Derby Squadron at the top of their game as they maintain their 100% winning record in the Wing sporting competitions.

The competition took place on Sunday 17th May at Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium in Leicester. Despite wet and windy racing conditions, the cadets from Derby performed extremely well and won the competition by a clear 36 points. The victory comes only 6 months after their success in the Wing Cross Country event.

As well as walking away with the overall title, the squadron also won the Senior Boys trophy. The Senior Boys team was captained by Flight Sergeant Ryan Kiddie (18). F/Sgt Kiddie had a very successful day, winning the 800 metres and the Long Jump. After the results were read out, F/Sgt Kiddie said, “The competition today was quite tight but we were hungry for victory. I have competed for my Squadron every year since I was thirteen but this was the best win yet.”

Squadron Leader Ian Marshall, Officer Commanding at Derby Squadron is extremely proud of the cadets. He said, “The cadets trained really hard for this competition and put in maximum effort on the day. We had a run for our money this year with 1211 Squadron coming a close second.”

126 Squadron performed well in both track and field events. Teamwork and motivation play a big part in the Squadron’s success and this could be heard echoing around the stadium for most of the day. The team, supporters and staff filled 2 buses to travel to and from the event and they spent most of the day cheering and shouting for their team mates. The Squadron is now looking towards the Wing Swimming competition in September.
