A Night To Remember for 1936 Sqn

1936 (Newton) Squadron recently held its annual Presentation Evening & Dining-In Night at Cotgrave Place Country Club in Nottingham with 118 guests. The Squadron was very pleased to welcome the Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke QC, Member of Parliament for the Borough of Rushcliffe and Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, as special guest speaker for the night. Mr Clarke, whose constituency encompasses Newton, gave a highly amusing and enlightening address which was enthusiastically received by those present.

Cadets, their families and friends, Squadron staff and Civilian Committee members, along with Officers and guests from various Nottinghamshire ATC Units all came together for an evening designed to celebrate 1936 (Newton) Squadron and its achievements over the past 12 months.

The Commanding Officer, Squadron Chairman and Squadron Padre were joined on the top table by the principle guests, including, Cllr Peter McGowan – Worshipful Mayor of the Borough of Rushcliffe, as well as the Lady Mayoress, Wg Cdr Nigel Dickinson – Officer Commanding South & East Midlands Wing, along with Mrs Dickinson, Wg Cdr Philip Giles OBE – representing East Midlands Reserve Forces & Cadet Association, Sqn Ldr John Hill MBE – South & East Midlands Wing Executive Officer and Sqn Ldr Andy Pass – South & East Midlands Wing Staff Officer.

After a superb three-course meal, the Officer Commanding 1936 (Newton) Squadron outlined the Unit’s many successes during the past year, most notably the Squadron rising 12 places in the Auster Trophy from 17th in 2008 to 5th in 2009. Replies to the Commanding Officer’s address were given by Cllr McGowan and Wg Cdr Dickinson, before FS Daniel Finch spoke on behalf of the Cadets, expressing their thoughts on the Squadron and its progress.

The night culminated with the presentation of the annual awards, most notably, the Best Cadet 2009 was presented to Cadet Tom Dodge, the Best NCO 2009 was presented to FS Daniel Finch, the Sports Personality of the Year Award was presented to Cadet Alex Heath, the Chairman’s Award for Endeavour was presented to CPL Kieran Robinson, and the Squadron Commanders Cup was presented to SGT (ATC) Sarah Hughes. Two promotions were also made on the night, Tom Dodge was promoted to Cadet Corporal and Alistair Hemmings was promoted to Cadet Sergeant.

Speaking about the night, the Officer Commanding 1936 (Newton) Squadron – Flt Lt Jodi Hudson, said: “The evening was a real success and will remain in the memories of all those present for many years to come. We were privileged to be joined by so many fantastic guests, who all added to the splendour of the occasion. The achievements of our Cadets highlighted on the night is to be commended, their hard work and enthusiasm is key to driving the Unit forward and helping 1936 progress on to even greater successes in the future.”
