Hundreds of young achievers from across the UK had a date in the prestigious setting of St. James’s Palace on Tuesday 12th April, including CWO Tom Hoier from 1101 (Kettering) Squadron.
Tom has attended 1101 Squadron Air Cadets in Kettering for the last five years and has achieved his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. He travelled to London on 12th April to receive his certificate from the DofE’s Trustee and Gold Award holder HRH The Earl of Wessex.
The Gold Award Presentation (GAP) is a celebration and recognition of Tom’s achievements in completing his Gold DofE programme. The GAP is a unique event and a fitting culmination to mark the hard work, determination and perseverance required.
To qualify for his Gold Award, Tom had to further develop his skills in judo and playing the tenor horn as well as continuing his service as a senior NCO in the Air Cadets. The expedition, spending several nights in the Andes Mountains of Peru was the highlight of the qualification.
Tom said “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award appealed to me as a qualification that I could achieve through Cadets that would be recognised by employers outside of the Corps. A matter of personal pride was the fact that I was able to complete my Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards in the space of four years.”
Tom’s Gold Award helped when it came to applying for university courses. He is currently a student at Brooke Weston Academy and has obtained an offer to study for a MEng degree in Chemical Engineering at Cambridge University beginning in October.
The Squadron is currently recruiting young people aged between 13 and 17 and is open Monday and Wednesday evening from 7.15pm to 9pm. The next intake night will be 4th May. The unit is also looking to recruit fundraisers, committee members and sponsors to assist with providing further training opportunities for the young people of the Kettering area. The Squadron can be contacted via a 24 answer phone on 01536 481999, or more information can be found on the website
