An Air Cadet from Birstall joined 45,000 military and civilian participants in the largest walking event in the world- The Nijmegen Road Marches.

David Thorne from the Birstall branch of the Air Cadets joined a team of fellow cadets from around the Midlands to take part in the Marches which take place over 4 days and covers 100 miles in total. The team has been training hard since January, and completed a 50 mile two-day march in preparation earlier this year.

Michael worked part-time to raise the funds to take part in the event and marched with the British Military Contingent, all of whom were wearing full uniform throughout the 100 miles, while temperatures reached highs of 35 Degrees Centigrade.

Flight Lieutenant Paul Vissani, Commanding Officer of Birstall Squadron Air Cadets said, “We’re very proud of David for taking part in the Nijemegen Marches, especially as he was the only member of the squadron to do so.” David commented that, “It was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, and hopefully I can encourage some others to do it next year.”
