Air Cadets help Lord Lieutenant
Article posted: Aug 28, 2008 by Sqn Ldr PassA total of 32 Cadets from 209 (West Bridgford), 1279 (Melton Mowbray) and 1461 (Wigston) Squadrons assisted Lady Jenny Gretton, the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire at the Stapleford Miniature Railway Open Weekend.
The Stapleford Miniature Railway is a ten and a quarter gauge railway that runs through land owned by the Gretton family and is operated and maintained by the supporting group, the Friends of Stapleford Miniature Railway. Every year they hold open days when the public can ride on the model steam trains and enjoy other attractions like fairground organs, historic tractors, steam engines and classic cars.

Cadet Adam Wright (209 Sqn) is sitting in model Great Western Railway Saint Class locomotive that was built in 1938. Kneeling next to him is Cdt Gareth Hughes (209 Sqn) and standing behind is Corporal Frances Tatlow (1279 Sqn) and Cdt Jack Concannon (1461 Sqn).
The Cadets were busy all weekend assisting the organisers by parking cars, keeping the show ground clean and entertaining the crowds with a tug of war against a Land Rover! They also ran a recruitment stand and sold raffle tickets.
Sergeant Shane Grice ATC, an instructor with 209 Sqn who has been associated with the Railway since he was a boy said “It was good to see the Cadets from different Sqns pulling together and really enjoying themselves, especially the tug of war with the Land Rover.”
