126 (City of Derby) Squadron shooting team have put in an outstanding performance at the pre-Inter Service Cadet Rifle Meet to qualify for the 2012 tri-service target rifle competitions. The team from Derby have retained the Air Gunners Trophy.

The pre-ISCRM camp was based at St Athen near Cardiff with the live firing being held at the Roget Moor Range near the Severn Bridge. This year the weather proved challenging with the wettest pre Bisley camp on record.

The Air Gunners match, held on the last day of the training camp, is based on a four man team and shot over three distances (300, 500 and 600 yards). 126 Squadron entered two teams in the competition and on the day, the “B” team came third overall. The Derby “A” team finished first overall with an outstanding 34 points clearance of second place.

Individual cadets also rose to the challenge of the day with Sgt Dean Cotterill placing as 3rd individual shot and Sgt James Thompstone placing 2nd. The star of the day was undoubtedly Sgt Alice Southall who was the top overall shot, dropping only 6 points out of a possible 150.

Sgt Alice Southall said, “I’m really happy to have scored a 144, holding a 48 out of 50 average. I just hope I can keep up the good scores next week at ISCRM.”
