Armed Forces Weekend in Stamford

Armed Forces Weekend in Stamford was one of the hottest weekends so far this year but that didn’t stop cadets and staff from getting out onto the Recreation Ground at Stamford and getting involved in the weekend’s events.

“We were lucky enough to get the Air Cadet Marquee from Wing Headquarters for this event and it looked great on the showground over the weekend.” Said Flight Lieutenant Helen Gibson.

Cadets manned the Air Cadet Marquee and showed off their new display board crammed with pictures of recent flying experiences and other exciting activities. They also had ‘Name the Tiger’ and ‘Guess the number of Sweets in the Jar’ competitions organised by Sgt ATC Hannah Coates as well as the fundraising Wing raffle tickets for sale. Not even Group Captain Hill RAF Witterings’ new Station Commander managed to escape from one of the squadrons top raffle ticket teams! In total the cadets managed to raise £225.60.

Although the Wing Raffle tickets won’t be drawn until September, ‘Name the Tiger’ was won by local youngster Rosy Turpy, while ‘Guess the sweets in the Jar’ was won by Jane McKee from the local Lions Club.

Over the weekend cadets from the squadron also took part in the annual ‘Longest Day’ gliding challenge. “Despite the poor weather start to Saturday the Cadets did eventually get airborne and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.” Said Civilian Instructor Paul Ferguson who took those cadets involved up to RAF Syerston for the afternoon.

Cadets also took part in some of the activities being offered by other organisations on the day. Cadet Rebecca Brackpool had a go at the ‘borrow a dog agility course’ and it was difficult to tell at some stages whether Cadet Brackpool was leading the dog over the course or the other way around! Her brother Corporal Brackpool, Cadets Evans and Fisher were particularly interested in the display by the RAF Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from RAF Wittering.

At the end of Sunday cadets and staff from 2071 took part in the Royal British Legions Sunset Ceremony.
