ATC Anniversary parade in Icy Swadlincote

On Sunday 8th February 2009, 40 members of 1211 (Swadlincote) Sqn Air Cadets, braved the icy conditions to celebrate the Anniversary of the formation of the Air Training Corps.

Known as “ATC Sunday” to the cadets, this annual February church service commemorates the formation of the ATC on the 5th February 1941. On this occasion, the Sqn was out in force, with the Band and Banner party leading the parade and in Church the cadets took an active role in welcoming the guests, delivering the Readings and helping with the collection.

Cdt Henry Harris (14), who delivered one of the readings said, “it was very cold but we all marched well and the band was good too. I was nervous when I did my reading but at the end I was proud that I had done it ”.

The parade and Church service, held in Newhall, Swadlincote was also attended by the Chair of South Derbyshire District Council, Councillor Ann Hood, plus Mr Stuart Allen, Chairman of the local branch of the Royal British Legion and 1211 Sqn’s President, Flt LT GW Thompson, a former WWII Spitfire pilot.

Councillor Ann Hood said, “I am always made so welcome by the cadets and staff of 1211 Sqn and I am pleased to support them at their Anniversary parade”.

As part of the service, a wreath was also laid in remembrance of those members of 1211 Sqn who have been lost over the past 68 years.
