126 (City of Derby) Squadron has won the South & East Midlands Wing Athletics competition for the 11th consecutive year. Despite stiff competition, the Derby cadets dug deep, pulled together and remain unbeaten in Athletics since the formation of the South & East Midlands Wing.

The competition took place on Sunday 9th May at Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium in Leicester. The cadets from Derby performed extremely well and won the competition by a clear margin. As well as walking away with the overall title, the squadron won the Youths, Senior Boys and Junior Girls trophies.

The Junior Girls team was captained by Cadet Adele Gibb. Cdt Gibb had a very successful day, winning the 200 metres and the High Jump. Cdt Gibb broke the Junior Girls Wing High Jump record by 5cm. The Junior Girls team performed well in other field events with Cdt Esmee Marsh taking first place in the Shot.

126 Squadron performed well in both track and field events. Teamwork and motivation played a big part in the Squadron’s success and this could be seen in the 4 × 100 metre relays where 126 Squadron won 3 out of the 5 relays. Individuals that shone through on the day included Cpl Ross Keeling who won the 1500 metres in the Senior Boys category and Cdt Lewis George who won the Youths Long Jump.

Flying Officer Jackie Barker, Sports Officer at Derby Squadron said, “The cadets had a lot of competition this year, in particular from our friendly rivals 1211 Squadron. However, at the end of the day, the determination and dedication of the cadets enabled them to continue the Squadron’s success in athletics.”

126 Squadron, who have recently been named as the Central & East Region representatives for Lees Trophy, will now turn their attention towards training for the Wing Field Day competition that takes place in June.
