1359 (Beeston) Squadron, Royal Air Force Air Cadets have had another successful day at the South and East Midlands Wing Athletics competition held at the Saffron Lane Stadium in Leicester. Finishing 3rd overall the Squadron also had considerable success in two classes by winning both the Senior Girls and Senior Boys competitions.
The event, held on Sunday 19th May, saw the 29 squadrons that make up the South and East Midlands Wing compete in various field and track events. Beeston’s Senior Boys 4×100m relay team, made up of Cadet Sergeant (Sgt) Sam Pike and Cadet Corporals (Cpl) Zack Hobson, Joe Mitchell and Daniel Lawton won their event with Cpl Hobson also winning his 100m class. The Junior Boys 1500m was also won by a Beeston cadet with Cadet Harry Soteriou finishing ahead of the other competitors.
The Senior Girls team, led by Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) Beth Denham, finished 1st overall for the 4th year running and CWO Denham also won the 400m in her class. However Beeston’s success was not due solely to these few results, the whole Squadron demonstrated tremendous commitment both in the build-up to the event as well as on the day itself. Beeston’s Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Phil Bannister VR(T), said “Once again 1359 have demonstrated to the rest of the Wing that they are a force to be reckoned with. We may not be the biggest but we consistently compete at the highest level, I’m extremely proud of all of them”.
