Cadets and staff from 1359 (Beeston) Squadron, Royal Air Force Air Cadets, are celebrating winning the annual South and East Midlands Wing Field Day. Held on Sunday 7th July at RAF Wittering the day saw the 29 squadrons that make up the Wing competing in various events such as Drill, Marksmanship, First Aid, Leadership and Aircraft Recognition.
The last few months had been very busy for 1359 with everyone on the Squadron involved in the training and preparation for the event. This reached a peak on the previous day when the drill team were at the Squadron for most of the day ensuring that their uniform was in tip-top condition ready for inspection on the Sunday. The effort paid off for them as they won the drill competition with Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO) Beth Denham coming second in the Best Drill Instructor competition. The Squadron had top 5 finishes in other events including joint first in the leadership exercise.
The trophies were presented to the winning squadrons by the Central and East Region Commandant, Group Captain Geoff Hewett RAF VR(T).1359’s Commanding Officer, Flight Lieutenant Phil Bannister RAF VR(T) said “I am so pleased for all of the cadets at the Squadron, not just those who participated today. The effort everyone has put in to the event over the last few months has paid off and they thoroughly deserve this success. My staff also need congratulating on their efforts in supporting, advising and guiding the Cadets through their preparation for the event.”
The drill team will now represent the Wing at the Region Field Day event to be held at RAF Wittering during September when they hope to emulate the Squadron’s success of 2009 when they also won that event and went on to become the 2nd best drill team in the Corps.
