Busy but profitable weekend for Long Eaton Air Cadets

The weekend of the 12th and 13th December 2009 saw a busy weekend for 2195 (Long Eaton) Squadron with no less than 25 members of the Squadron involved in four completely different and challenging activities.

On Saturday 12th December, nine cadets and two members of staff along with three civilian committee members were collecting at the Asda Superstore in Long Eaton. During the day the cadets, staff and committee members packed bags furiously and, thanks to the generosity of the people of Long Eaton, managed to raise just under £500 for the Squadron in just a few hours of work. Flt Lt Roy Smith an ex Officer Commanding of the Squadron popped in during the day to support the Squadron and commented “It’s great to see so many cadets out in the community supporting the Squadron”.

Also on Saturday Corporal Gracie Cousins and Corporal Alex Tolson attended the South & East Midlands Wing Initial Non-Commissioned Officers (INCO) Course at RAF Cottesmore near Oakham. Throughout the weekend they furthered their skills in leadership, communication, drill and presentation skills. Also during the weekend, Flt Lt Jack Stepanian and Sgt Katie Macpherson, both staff members at 2195 Sqn, assisted in the delivery of the course.

Sunday saw another packed day for 2195 Sqn with four cadets going gliding at RAF Syerston near Newark with Civilian Instructor Richard Bayliss. All the cadets had completed at least stage 1 of their Gliding Induction Course with all of them gliding for the first time.

Whilst this was happening, the Initial NCO Course continued at RAF Cottesmore and Cadet Warrant Officer Darren Walker arrived at RAF Cottesmore on the Sunday morning to commence his Cadet NCO Drill Instruction Course, having trained cadets to glide at RAF Syerston, where he volunteers as a Flight Staff Cadet, on the Saturday.

After such a fun packed weekend you would expect most people to try to have a relaxing time in the run up to Christmas, but not for 2195 Squadron. Monday night was their annual Christmas fun night which was a fantastic night in the run up to the Squadron’s annual Christmas Camp over the weekend of the 19th and 20th December 2009.
