Cadets Cook Up Charity Donation for Christmas

Fifty Five Cadets from both 348 (Ilkeston) Squadron, RAF Air Cadets and C Company, Hallcroft Detachment, Mercian Regiment Army Cadets wanted something different for a little Christmas inter-service rivalry.

The challenge laid down by Flt Lt Woodward, one of the Air Cadet Officers was to complete a Master Chef style competition using only standard portable Gas Stoves and Army “Mess tins” whilst at the same time take part in a Charity Fundraising Event. The theme chosen for the challenge was to raise funds for the “Big Curry” Night which is part of the ABF Soldiers Charity Fund.

Cadets from both units prepared and cooked their individual curries during the units meeting night at the Old TA Centre in Ilkeston. Flt Lt Woodward said “It was a great way, of building relationships with the Army Cadets, in a way where both units get a training benefit and we also raised money for a worthwhile cause”

Air Cadet – Cdt Alex Nelson, 14 from Ilkeston said “There were some bizarre curries on offer, including an Army Cadet entry which included Chocolate within the curry sauce – I always knew the Army ate strange things.”

In total the two units raised £70 for the Big Curry fund, and has now started imaginations going on what the next challenge will be based upon. The results were a draw. With the ACF taking the non-vegetarian crown and the Air Cadets taking the vegetarian win.
