Cadets mark Armed Forces Day with flag raising
A number of young people from Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force (ACF) and the Air Training Corps (ATC) helped to mark the start of Armed Forces week by raising a flag at County Hall in West Bridgford on Monday 23 June.
Joining Mr Aubrey Sales, a 90 year old veteran of D Day, at the County Hall event was The Venerable Air Vice Marshall Robin Turner CB, the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant, also the Chairman of the County Council Pauline Allan alongside other members of the County and City civic leadership.
The Parade Marshall was Cadet Company Sergeant Major Lucy Hoyes, a 17 year old cadet with the Ruddington Detachment of Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force. Lucy said: “It was a great honour to be involved with today’s flag raising event as it was a great way for us to help raise the profile of both our Cadet units locally as well as visually showing our support to the Armed Forces.”
Cadet Sergeant Saffron Green of 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron ATC, a 16 year old student who will be starting her A Levels at Bilborough College this autumn with the aim of gaining commission in the RAF, said, “I was very pleased that I had the opportunity to be part in the Armed Forces Day Flag Raising ceremony at County Hall, it was also a great honour to meet Mr Aubrey Sales, a D-Day veteran and hear about his experiences during the Second World War, when he was not much older than I am”.
