On the 3rd September 2011 at 0530hrs 20 cadets from 2248 (Rutland) and 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Sqn’s gathered on the banks of Rutland water to marshal the cycle route of the annual Vitruvian Triathlon, also known as a half Ironman.
The Vitruvian is Rutland’s biggest sporting event attracting over 1,000 national and international competitors and combining a 1900m swim, an 85km bike course and a 21km run, so it’s not for the feint hearted.
The two Squadrons took responsibility for providing directions to the competitors, reporting accidents to emergency services and playing a strategic part in relaying information about the traffic conditions around the Water which was imperative given the early morning exceptional speed of some motorists.
The Squadrons were lead by Flt Lt Jackie Lawrence who commented; “I am very proud of the cadets who took part. They were vigilant and worked extremely hard – their day started at 0430hrs. It was a very worthwhile exercise as it allowed the Air Cadets to have a presence at a significant sporting event and raised over £300 for the Sqns.
