Change in Command at Syston Squadron

Article posted: Apr 14, 2010 by sl6

Pilot Officer Andy Houghton has been appointed as the new Officer in Charge (OiC) of 1181 (Syston) Squadron after Flight Lieutenant Mat Faulkner’s move to 348 (Illkeston) Squadron. Mat had been with the squadron for over 6 years having moved from Loughborough to Syston on an initial temporary secondment.

Andy joined South & East Midlands wing in September 2007 initially as a Civilian Instructor having taken 7 years out from the Corps in order to pursue his career as a Police Officer with Leicestershire Constabulary. Having been with the cadets from the age of 13 with No. 277 (Blackwood) Squadron, No. 1 Welsh Wing where he was also a CI – Andy decided to take on a bigger role with Syston and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in 2008. Having completed his initial officer’s course in July 2009 he has been operating as the Squadrons Adjutant and DofE Officer.

Flt Lt Mat Faulkner hands over command of 1181 (Syston) Sqn to Plt Off Andy Houghton.

Talking about the challenges ahead Andy says “I am looking forward to taking charge of my first squadron – I must admit that I did not expect to find myself in this position this soon, however, I am really looking forward to pushing the squadron on to bigger and better things”.

“I have been fortunate as I have been left with a good framework to build upon and have a very positive, ambitious staff team and a well supported Civilian Committee – what more could I ask for!”

Andy effectively took the helm on the 26th March 2010 after the Squadrons “Dining Out’ night arranged for their former Officer Commanding. Alongside this event the Squadron also expressed their thanks for the services of Civilian Instructor Diane Reeves who has also decided recently to part with the Squadron in order to support the Royal British Legion in Syston. Commenting about the event, Plt Off Houghton said: “To lose two staff members with so much experience like Mat and Diane is always disappointing for the Squadron – both will be missed by both staff and cadets alike. We wish them all the best in their future roles”
