The Squadron’s third Charity Ball held at Market Harborough Rugby Club on September 11 raised over £1800 for the Macmillan Cancer Charity and Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Unit.
The Ball is held to raise money in memory of Cathy O’Neill and Michael Standish both members of the squadron who died from cancer aged 17 and 23 respectively.
The 85 guests included staff, cadets, past cadets and members of staff, parents and friends who all enjoyed a fun night dancing to the music of the Big Bopper Disco.
Additional entertainment was provided by Jimmy James, a local magician and children’s entertainer who kept the crowds enthralled with his sleight of hand table magic at the start of the evening and during the refreshments.
The event was rounded off with an auction of items donated by friends and local businesses. With the encouragement of the auctioneer (and the non bidders) those bidding found themselves caught up in fast and furious bids and consequently several items sold above ‘reserve’.
Flt Lt Standish, the instigator of the Ball said ‘I am very grateful to all those who supported the Ball this year, it was voted the best yet. Hopefully the event will be held again next year and I would love to see more ex-cadets and parents involved. It is a really fun night and obviously raises money for a good cause.’
