Coalville Air Cadets learn Valuable Skills

Article posted: Jul 16, 2010 by Flt Lt Rayson-Flynn

Air cadets from Coalville have been learning valuable life skills.

Last month the squadron was visited by fire fighters from RAF Cottesmore. The cadets learnt about being a fire fighter in the RAF and Royal Navy. They learnt about the different types of fire extinguishers available and when to use them. They learnt about hazards around the home, including leaving a deodorant can on a window sill where it can overheat and explode. Following a demonstration of using fire blankets and extinguishers safely, the cadets had a go had putting out controlled fires.

This month 17 cadets from the squadron have received their British Heart Foundation Heart start Certificates. The cadets have learnt how to respond to common medical emergencies, buying time until paramedics arrive. They have learnt about the recovery position, performing CPR, how to deal with symptoms of a heart attack, how to treat choking and bleeding.
