Dead Heat at South & East Midlands Wing Field Day
Article posted: Jun 25, 2008 by Sqn Ldr RichardsIt was the closest finish possible as two squadrons tied for first place at the South & East Midlands Wing Field Day competition held at RAF Wittering.
With gale force winds making the outdoor activities difficult, 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron and 1359 (Beeston) Squadron could not be separated and shared the McKenzie Cup as joint overall Field Day winners.

1359 (Beeston) Squadron also lifted the Weetabix Millennium Shield for First Aid and Wing Commander Giles Cup for the Leadership Exercise and 1211 (Swadlincote) Squadron consistently scored well and deservedly ran out joint winners.
Losing out by only four points, 126 (City of Derby) Squadron took third place. However, Dacre Sword winner, CWO Ireland of 126 Squadron, received the Liquorish Award for best male cadet within the Wing as well as receiving the Robert Hall Cup for best overall cadet within the Wing. The Liquorish Award for the best female cadet went to CWO Marshall also of 126 Squadron.

The Auster Trophy for the best squadron within the Wing went to 2070 (Glenfield) Squadron. This trophy marks the achievements of the Squadron on all cadet activities covering the previous year.
In addition, 1084 (Market Harborough) Squadron were presented with the Sumiagro Millennium Cup for best Full Band which they won at the Wing Band Day in April.
Station Commander of RAF Wittering, Group Captain Paul Higgins, was on hand to present the various trophies and certificates earned during a long day of competition.

Sqn Ldr Mark Richards – Wing Training Officer (Cadet Development) who organised the Wing Field Day said “I’d like to thank all the teams that participated in this year’s Wing Field Day and also to thank all the members of staff who supported the day’s activities and events.
All participants worked hard during the day and there were some very credible results which Squadron teams should feel justifiably proud of. Congratulations to all recipients of the Awards and Trophies”.
The winning teams will now go on to represent South & East Midlands Wing at the Central & East Region Field Day on the 7th September 2008.
