The Corps of Drums, led by Cadet Flight Sergeant Ross Keeling, performed three 5 minute routines in the main mall in the busy shopping centre. Cdt F/Sgt Keeling said, “It was great fun to perform our routine in front of a large crowd. Young and old people gathered as our drums echoed throughout the centre.”
The Corps of Drums were accompanied in the busy Derby shopping centre by some of the senior cadets from 126 Squadron who spent the day helping out on the Concierge Desk.
126 Squadron were in the Westfield Centre for the launch event as Westfield’s charity of the year. Over the next 12 months, employees from the Westfield Centre will raise money for the Squadron to enable more cadets to go on weekend camps and to have the opportunity to gain new qualifications and life skills.
Flying Officer Jackie Glover will be responsible for the relationship with Westfield. She said, “We were delighted to be chosen as Westfield’s charity of the year. The judging panel really identified with what a difference the Air Cadets can make to a young person’s life. They are keen to see young people from Derby grow into responsible members of the local community.”
126 Squadron will support the Westfield Centre at several events over the coming year, including a drill challenge and a Christmas wrapping service. Officer Commanding 126 Squadron, Squadron Leader Ian Marshall said, “Not only is this an opportunity for us to raise money, it is also a chance to raise the Air Cadet profile within the City of Derby.”
