For 3 cadets from 1181 (Syston) Squadron, Sunday 8th April was no ordinary Easter Sunday!
The three were lucky enough to take up the chance to fill some last minute gliding slots with 643 Volunteer Gliding School (VGS) based at RAF Syerston.
For two of the cadets, Cadet Sergeant Norman and Cadet Adkin, it was the first time that they had been gliding. The staff and volunteers at 643 VGS took the first timers through the basic controls of a glider allowing the cadets to take control during their flights. At the end of the day they were both awarded with a certificate for completing Gliding Induction Course 1. For Cadet Snart, he had the opportunity to complete the final Gliding Induction Course, learning more advanced skills and getting the opportunity to have 5 launches during the day.
After a brilliant day with 643VGS, there was a special opportunity for Pilot Officer McGlynn, 1181 (Syston) Squadron Adjutant. He was offered the chance to fly by 643VGS Adjutant, Flight Lieutenant Faulkner, who also used to be the Commanding Officer at 1181 (Syston) Squadron.
As Pilot Officer McGlynn had completed his Gliding Induction Courses when he was a cadet, Flight Lieutenant Faulkner awarded him a special certificate for completing Gliding Induction Course 3+.
“Everybody involved had a fantastic day and we are really grateful to the team at 643VGS who made sure that the cadets had such a great day! The cadets all came back with smiles on their faces and I’m sure they will be back in the air as soon as they get the next opportunity!”.
