Last week Firefighter Chris Rollestone visited 1188 Coalville Sqn Air Training Corps to tell the cadets about his job.
Firefighter Chris Rollestone who is a former air cadet himself from 1F Sqn, is a full time fire fighter based in Leicester City centre but he also a volunteer with the UK Fire Services Search and Rescue Team (UKFSSART). UKFSSART provides international search and rescue all over the world and is on call 24 hours a day, everyday of the year. They provide specialist advice, canine search teams, specialist search and rescue equipment as well as complete teams to carry out the rescue operation.
Chris Rollestone told the cadets about one operation in particular, his trip to Algeria in 2003 after the earthquake. The earthquake was 6.7 on The Richter Scale and the country was badly affected. Ninety five UKFSSART team members and seven dogs flew out to Algeria. They were joined by other volunteers from all over Europe. They went out to the Boumerdes region. They used their specialist search cameras and sensitive listening devises to try and find casualties trapped under collapsed buildings.
