Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, Bavaria, Germany
27th August – 4th September 2010
We set off to Bavaria, South West Germany, on Friday the 27th August in the evening. The pick up points were all across the country from Cumbria to Dover. The total journey for me was 18 hrs and 30 mins. We stayed at a D of E Lodge in a town called Oberstorf. On the Sunday we all set off in our groups for an acclimatisation walk to become accustomed to the height and the Bavarian maps.
On the Monday we went to a local town to get any last minute equipment and souvenirs. On Tuesday we all set out on our different locations around Bavaria where we planned to start. My group decided to start in a town on the German/Austrian border and walked through Austria to the first campsite. During the days that we walked we had to do some project work. As a group we decided to do Artwork of the activities and the surroundings, such as a “kitman” out of our kit and a waterfall.
Being in a foreign country we had the issue of the language barrier so it was essential to learn some basic German. The views in Bavaria were amazing and the experience was unforgettable!
