Junior Football Triumph – At Last
The South & East Midlands Wing Junior Footballers finally won the elusive Inter Wing Trophy overcoming the Regions other five teams by a goal difference of one.
“The Wing finally takes it all! Congratulations to South and East Midlands Wing Junior Football team who finally bought home the silverware today for winning the inter wing competition. It was the only trophy not won in my time as Wing Sports Officer and won just in time as I prepare to take maternity leave. So proud of all my team both staff and Cadets” said Flight Lieutenant Lynda Waplington–Richards.
Having drawn three of the matches, the team beat Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire Wing by three goals and went on to beat arch rivals Trent Wing by the match’s only goal. The team beat Norfolk and Suffolk Wing into second place by just one goal difference.
Civilian Instructor Gemma Peacock, the Team Manager was ecstatic; “Every cadet that was part of the team played outstandingly and showed great teamwork. This was even more remarkable as they never played with each other as a team before the tournament. We started off slowly and the wind made it hard for every team, but once they got into the game, goals were being scored. Well done and I was so proud to be team manager and had great support from the other staff”.
On receiving the news, Officer Commanding the Wing, Wing Commander Nigel Dickinson stated; “I am proud of both teams today for all the effort put into the competition. Congratulations to the Football team on their tremendous win, I cannot remember the last time the Wing won this competition”
