On the 14th May, the 2195 (Long Eaton) Squadron ran a Heartstart course ran by Civilian Instructor, Mrs Thayers. The night included watching videos on how to respond to serious bleeding, choking, heart attack, and how to complete CPR and put casualties in the recovery position.
The cadets watched a clip one by one and then Mrs Thayers asked questions. To learn how to do the recovery position Cadet Kira Beadle volunteered herself to be an unconscious casualty, then Mrs Thayers showed the Cadets how to do it. After the demonstration the cadets paired up and practiced, taking it in turns to be the casualty and first aider. Next the cadets learnt how to perform CPR, with a demonstration from Cadet Beadle, then it was time for each cadet to have a go on the resuscitation doll, and in the meantime other cadets practiced the recovery position.
Cadet Madison Stevenson said “the night was really fun I enjoyed learning and practicing recovery position and would like to complete the St John youth first aid course as soon as possible.”
Overall the night was great fun and a success of learning, 11 Cadets successfully completed the qualification along with 2 members of staff.
