Nine cadets and seven members of staff joined a legion of over 300 cadets in support of Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton and Comic Relief at a very cold and snowy RAF Cranwell on Tuesday 12th February. Helen has been set 7 challenges to do in the 7 weeks running up to the red Nose Day event on the 18th March.
So far she has taken a kick at Twickenham in front of 82,000 fans and performed in 2 musicals in one evening in London’s West End. Her third challenge was to fly a full training sortie with the RAF’s Red Arrows Display Team over RAF Cranwell. Not one to miss out on an opportunity Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, who is responsible for the whole of the Air Cadet Organisation, was asked to provide 50 cadets to play a part in the challenge. With over 300 turning up, the BBC decided to do something a bit special.
After providing the BBC with entertainment for a few hours whilst Helen and the Red Arrows got ready, the cadets marched onto the parade ground in front of College Hall Officers Mess and were directed into the letters of RND on the grass in front of the College. The BBC took their positions around them and on the rooftops to view the spectacle. Once the Red Arrows were in place the cadets held up red and black umbrellas so you could see the letters from the air.
Helen and the cadets had a great day. She said: “I was sick with nerves and excitement before the flight but I feel honoured to have had this opportunity and I feel completely ecstatic now I’ve done it.”
“The air cadets have been fantastic and I was genuinely overwhelmed when I saw all of the hard work they have done fundraising and how many turned out to see the fly past today.”
