Article posted: Jun 24, 2008 by Sqn Ldr Wilson
On Monday 23rd June, 126 (City of Derby) Squadron held a presentation evening. The Guest of Honour for the evening was the Mayor of Derby, Councillor Barbara Jackson.
The presentation evening was held to award 176 certificates to 60 Cadets. The evening was the culmination of over 12 months hard work for the Cadets, age 13 to 20.
Certificates and badges were issued for a range of subjects and included 21 Duke of Edinburgh Silver Awards, 11 BTEC in Public Services, 28 Millennium Volunteer certificates, 23 Young Life Saver Plus awards, 20 Shooting badges and 22 Amateur Radio certificates.
Special certificates were awarded to Cadet Warrant Officer Stephanie Marshall and Cadet Warrant Officer Matt Ireland who were named the best male and female Cadet in South & East Midlands Wing. CWO Marshall went on to come second in the national competition. CWO Ireland went on to win the Dacre Sword competition and is now the best male Cadet in the Air Training Corps.
Squadron Leader Ian Marshall, Officer Commanding 126 Squadron said, “The Squadron has never issued so many certificates at a presentation evening. The Cadets have worked extremely hard over the last 12 months and should be proud of what they have achieved.”
Following the presentations, Councillor Jackson was given a tour of the Squadron. The Mayor was shown some of the activities on offer to the Cadets. These included shooting, modelling, leadership and aircraft recognition. The Mayor also watched a display by the Squadron Band and the Squadron Rifle Continuity Drill Display Team.
At the end of the evening Councillor Jackson addressed the Cadets and commented on their high level of achievement. She said, “You are a credit to your families and the City of Derby. I am proud that 126 Squadron is in the City of Derby.”
