A group of Air Cadets from 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron, South and East Midlands Wing have had the opportunity to take part in target shooting with the No8 Rifle for the very first time on 10th February 2015. The group of Air Cadets had previously taken part in a Skill at Arms Training Day with Flying Officer Daniel McGlynn RAFVRT, Squadron Shooting Officer. During the day, they learnt the importance of handling a rifle safely, how to follow correct and safe procedures with the rifle, how to clean and maintain the rifle safely and what to do when they are on the range. The day ended with a Weapons Handling Test for all of the cadets, which they had to pass if they were to be allowed to shoot the weapon on a live range.
As the group had successfully passed their Weapons Handling Test, they took the chance to fire alongside some of the more experienced firers within the squadron and learn a bit about marksmanship within target shooting. Even with a very cold range, the firers all had a fantastic evening and are now keen to have another chance to get back onto the range and see if they can work their way up to earning a marksman badge.
