A team of Air Cadets from 1279 (Melton Mowbray) Squadron, South and East Midlands Wing have been taking part in the Air Training Corps No8 Rifle Challenge Cup Shooting Competition over the past couple of months. The competition, organised by the Council for Cadet Rifle Shooting, sees cadets from across the country aiming to get the best score across ten shots per team member.
The team of Air Cadets from Melton consisted of some very experienced firers with the last competition that they had taken part in being the Inter-Service Cadet Rifle Meeting (ISCRM) at Bisley ranges. One of the team members has previously performed so well, he has achieved his ‘Cadet 100’ badge awarded to the top 100 shots across the three cadet forces. With all of this behind them, the pressure has been on to perform well. Over the course of the competition, they have successfully shot their way into the second round, scoring in the top 50% of all entrants. Now that the team have fired the second round, it’s a waiting game to see how well they score but they are very confident of some good results.
Flying Officer Daniel McGlynn RAFVRT, Squadron Shooting Officer, commented, “It’s great to see a group of young people so enthusiastic about target shooting and with such determination to succeed. The squadron is very proud of their achievements within the competition so far and I’m sure they’ll continue to do us very proud with their scores in round 2.”
