On a starry November night, Cadets from 1211 (Swadlincote) Sqn braved the cold weather to take part in an interactive evening with the Derby Mountain Rescue Team (Derby MRT).
The evening began with the Derby MRT giving a short presentation on their role as a rescue team, followed by a “hands-on” round robin of activities including a tour of their Command & control vehicle, Rescue stretcher demonstrations and carrying, splinting and evacuating casualties. Due to the cold, there were plenty of volunteers to be trussed up in the warm confines of the stretcher!
Cdt Chloe Mitchell (16) said, “It was interesting to see and try out the equipment that the rescue team uses and it was fun to be carried around in the stretcher, although it was hard work when I had to carry it. I have recently completed my Silver DofE Expedition in the Peak District and it is great to know that there is a team ready to rescue you if things go wrong”.
1211 Sqn’s Training Officer, Fg Off Ruth Morgan, who arranged the visit, said; “ The cadets often ask to have presentations by external groups and organisations and so we plan a number of these into our parade night training programme each year. This the second visit to the Sqn HQ by the Derbyshire Mountain Rescue Team and the cadets thoroughly enjoyed the interactive evening”.
Cadets and staff from 1211 have been involved with the Derby MRT for the last couple of years in a variety of ways. In January this year, Staff and members of the Civilian Committee played casualties in a Mountain Rescue training exercise in the Peak District. In June, cadets undertook a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Derby MRT. Members of the team accompanied the cadets on this walk and provided practical navigation and emergency procedure training “en-route”. Throughout October and November, the squadron has been collecting stamps, which were presented to the Derby MRT during the evening, to be recycled in support of their fundraising efforts.
At the end of the night, the cadets thanked the team for giving up their time to make the interactive evening such a success. The cadets also expressed an interest in maintaining ties with the Derby MRT and to continue to support them in their fundraising efforts. As such, the team have invited 1211 Sqn to join them in a sponsored event to abseil down Derby Cathedral in September 2009. As always, 1211 Sqn staff will be leading from the front ….. well Fg Off Ruth Morgan will be (says the rest of the staff team !).
