On 25th June I was pleased and proud to be able to represent the Squadron and the Air Training Corps at the ceremony held at Notts County Council Headquarters in West Bridgford when a special flag was raised to commemorate the start of Armed Forces Week.
There were many dignatories in attendance led by Chairman of Notts County Council and many representatives from the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force together with people from the Royal British Legion and twelve Cadets each from the Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force.
The flag was brought to the venue on the embankment via a Police Speedboat travelling along the River Trent and was carried to the flagpole by an Army Cadet and given to Sir Andrew Buchanan, Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire – sadly this was his last official engagement as Lord Lt as he is retiring after many years service.
During the raising of the flag there was a fanfare after which the Ven (AVM) Robin Turner CB DL RAF (Rtd) led the prayers for peace.
After the ceremony we were invited into the County Hall for light refreshments where I had the honour to converse first with Cdr Judith Swann DL and later Col Roger Merryweather TD DL who both said how smart I looked and they were very grateful the Cadets attended. Col Merryweather said he was pleased to see I had been awarded my DofE and asked whether I was going to continue with future DofE Awards to which I said “yes, sir”. He also asked if I wanted to join the Royal Air Force which I hope to do.
When we left we chatted to an 87 year old lady who was in the ATS during the Second World War. On the way home the Sqn Chairman treated me to a McDonalds.
This was a really good and enjoyable morning
