During the week of half term, Cadets and Staff from Newton Sqn attended a joint camp along with 2071 (Stamford) Sqn and 1181 (Syston) Sqn from South and East Midlands wing and 1827 (Odiham) Sqn and local Odiham CCF unit based at Gordon’s School from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wing.
The camp began with exercise and flight briefings at No18 Sqn at RAF Odiham, before the joint exercise took to the sky in Chinook helicopters. After a short flight the cadets landed at Bramley Training Area where they camped for three days. Cadet Brown from Newton Squadron said, “It was an amazing experience and a great opportunity to make new friends from other units.” Cadet Walker along with many others on the camp said, “My favourite part was getting to fly in a Chinook.”
The camp was filled with many FCT opportunities and assessments including reconnaissance tasks, camouflage and concealment, radio control and first aid. Both staff and cadets alike enjoyed the camp, especially Sgt (ATC) Dan Finch from 1936 (Newton) Sqn as he celebrated his 21st birthday in style with three giant cakes to feed the entire camp! “What a way to mark my 21st, a flight in a Chinook and cake, there is no way I will be able to forget how I spent the day!”
Many thanks go out to the Cadets and staff at 1827 (Odiham) Squadron for planning and organising such an amazing camp as well as being such wonderful hosts! We are looking forward to another joint camp soon.
